If you don’t know by now bone broth is one of the best healing foods you can consume. I tend to preach about healthy fats and this is the ultimate healthy fat. Bone broth has many healing qualities with digestive health, brain function and anti-inflammatory just to name a few. Always source the highest quality and ideally organic bones for bone broth. I recommend going to your butcher and asking where their meat comes from and if they can cut fresh bones for you. This allows you to control the size based on the pot or slow cooker.
Bone Broth in 3 easy steps
1. Take your raw beef bones and boil in water for 20 minutes - this removes the impurities which causes bone broth to have a slightly funky flavor if this step is missed.
2. Roast your bones on a baking tray in the oven at 400° for 30 minutes flipping the bones halfway through - roasting brings out the rich flavor by caramelizing the bones
3. Slow cook your bones for 3 days, yes 3 days! You never want the heat to be more than a light simmer. Place your bones, ¼ cup raw apple cider vinegar, peppercorns, 4 or 5 whole cloves of garlic smashed, bay leaves and I use 2 tablespoons of my Dry Brine instead of salt - you don’t want to overwhelm the broth at this stage, less is more.
Once you are turning your broth into soup that's when you fill the pot with all the other veggies we love in a soup. I use a slow cooker so I can set it and forget it, maintaining the perfect simmer on low and not compromise my oven or stovetop space. If you follow these 3 simple steps you can't go wrong and will be sipping delicious bone broth all season.
